Poets and writers will soon compete for prizes at a literary and musical gathering on the bayou.

Lei’s Cafe on the Bayou hosts a poetry night on Saturday, October 25. The event opens with music by Joaquin Gustav at 4:00 PM SLT. Mr. Gustav is a talented guitarist, composer, and Avi Choice Award winner from Argentina. His diverse playlist includes jazz, tango, milonga, candomblé, and something called “rock music.”

Starting at 5:00 PM, Taloosters and friends present their favorite poems and short stories. Prizes will be awarded for the top two original works.

To register to perform a reading, send a note to Miss Lei Pari by October 23. Include your name, poem or short story title, the name of person who wrote it (you or the original author), and the text of the poem or short story.

An important message from the mayor

by on Monday, April 21st, 2014

Dear Citizens,

I recently received the following letter from Miss Eugenie Theriot:

April 14
New Toulouse
General Delivery
Mayor Henri Godenot

Dear Mr. Henri,

I’m hoping this letter finds you well. Actually, I hope this letter finds you at all. You see, I have a bad feeling about this radio thing.

I think there is some kind of message in those numbers. I’ve asked the math department here at school, and they don’t know what it is. Maybe you could check the broadcast, and see if it is the same?

The first message:
1, 40, 50, 50, 4, 0, 11, 91, 90, 91, 92, 00, 11, 40, 30, 5, 1, 61, 20, 50, 11, 90, 5, 0, 80, 51, 21, 6

The second message:
0, 12, 02, 00, 51, 31, 62, 0, 1, 41, 5, 1, 20, 11, 40, 40, 91, 40, 7, 0, 80, 51, 80, 5

With gravest concern,
Eugenie Theriot

You will recall that Miss Theriot discovered something strange about the radio station, and the daily fishwrapper published a story about it on March 28.

If Miss Theriot is concerned, I’m concerned. I asked her parents to check the broadcast, and they can’t make Miss Theriot’s crystal set work. I checked with a few citizens who had radios, and they report that the broadcast is the same as Miss Eugenie’s second message.

Your assistance would be appreciated. If anyone can decode these mysterious numeric messages, we may be able to get to the bottom of this. I will pay L$2,500 to the first person able to decode these messages, or half that if they can decode one of them.

Sincerely,

Henri Godenot

Street name winners revealed

by on Saturday, June 15th, 2013

And today we announce the street names!

We had excellent participation in the Big Street-Naming Contest. The entries ran the gamut from Puns to Sublime. There were themed requests, memorial requests, and historical requests; I’m happy to say we will have examples of each.

So here is a map and a legend (“hurriedly scrawled using mud,” Yvonne muttered), to show you the results. It will be followed by a fancy formal map in the Land Office, and street signs.

Thanks to everyone who submitted an entry! And I would like to specially thank the local merchants who donated prizes for this contest.

The Big Street-Naming Contest

by on Saturday, May 11th, 2013

street-naming-contest
Help choose names for our city’s streets!

To participate in the contest you must have been a member of Gens de New Toulouse for the past 30 days. By submitting an entry, even if your street name is not chosen, you will be entered into a raffle for prizes from local merchants. Winning street names will be chosen by the mayor’s select panel of judges, and the final decision will be the mayor’s. Raffle winners and winning street names will be announced on June 15.

How to Enter

• Make a notecard, and name it “SNC Entry for [your username].” Improperly named notecards will not be considered contest entries.

• You may submit up to five street names for consideration.

• If your name is for a particular street, embed a landmark in your notecard and include a short description.

• Send your entry to Yvonne Follet by May 31.

Some Ideas

• New Toulouse is based on New Orleans of the early twentieth century, so submitting historically significant names would be good.

• Submit names of SL avatars associated with New Toulouse and Bayou for their outstanding achievements; explain what these are. For example, Carricre Wind, founder of the estate.

• Submit any sort of street name you please, but explain why it should be considered.

Sample Contest Entry

SNC Entry from Jean Deaux [Name of the notecard]

Avatar Name: Jean Deaux [Username, not display name]

1. Rue du Violet Mouton—in English, Violet Mouton Street, so it looks like a person’s name (In honor of the magic sheep of old Algiers, and the famous Acadian general and governor)

2. Rue du Kingfish (historical)

3. Alley of Tears (because I lost my sweetheart there, and it’s romantic) [embedded landmark] (between the levee and the cross street)

4. Carricre Boulevard (because she was the founder)

5. Nightingale Parkway (because of the park) [embedded landmark] (the short road just north of Nightingale Park)
